Save Your Skin Foundation with BC Legislature in Victoria, BC on Sept 28, 2015.

Save Your Skin Foundation, along with the support of MLA Jane Thornthwaite, welcomed MLAs from the BC Legislative Assembly to a reception and presentation on various new melanoma treatments that have become available in Canada and explained how they are changing the landscape for melanoma patients and increasing survivorship. KFM was very excited to plan and execute this inspiring event.

With the recent emergence of new treatments, there is now a real hope of survivorship for melanoma patients. Previously, many melanoma patients could only expect a survival rate of 10%. With a variety of new treatments released in recent years, these figures are improving drastically. There is real hope for survivorship.

Save Your Skin Founder Kathleen Barnard welcomed the MLAs and explained how a collaborative effort is needed to ensure that patients are receiving timely access to the best available care. With these new treatments, and the knowledge that more are coming soon, patients, doctors, pharmaceutical companies and government decision makers all have an important part to play.

Dr. Vanessa Bernstein, leading oncologist with the BC Cancer Agency, explained the nitty gritty of these new treatments and how they will soon become the standard of care.

Melanoma survivor and friend of Save Your Skin, Nigel Deacon, closed the reception with an inspiring word. Nigel is a Victoria resident and was diagnosed with terminal ocular melanoma, but thanks to a trial treatment of a new drug, has been stable for more than two years. This new treatment is the same drug that saved the life of Save Your Skin Founder Kathleen Barnard.

    Thanks to Supporters

Coming straight from the World Cancer Congress in Vienna, the Save Your Skin team received a helping hand from sponsor Harbour Air who flew us directly from downtown Vancouver to downtown Victoria in order to be on site, on time.

The Save Your Skin team was warmly greeted in sunny Victoria by MLA Jane Thornthwaite and treated to a tour of the BC Legislature and a chance to attend the House Question Period.

Victoria Conference Centre was instrumental in putting together this important reception & presentation.

Filming New Save Your Skin Public Service Announcement

kfm and Save Your Skin spent a great afternoon together yesterday filming for the upcoming Save Your Skin public service announcement.

The new PSA is due to run this fall as part of Save Your Skin’s seasonal campaign focusing on Survivorship for patients diagnosed with melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancers.

Survivorship is a message that is near and dear to Save Your Skin Founder Kathleen Barnard. We decided to film in her home in Lynn Valley using friends and family instead of actors.

We look forward to sharing it later this fall!

Supporting companies that are ‘green’ and ‘do good’

One of the most rewarding parts of working in an agency setting is meeting so many socially-conscious companies and the amazing people that run them!

At kfm, we have been fortunate enough to connect with many companies that place a high importance on environmentally-conscience operations, no-waste products and patient advocacy.

Currently, we work with Pedersen’s Event Rentals, who are constantly initiating new ways to reduce the environmental impact of their operations with disposable packaging, high efficiency washing machine, paper-free offices, and more!

We also work with the Save Your Skin Foundation, who work to raise awareness of melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancers, provide melanoma patients with access to information about trial drugs, emotional and financial support, and more!

We now work with Delish General Store, which sells several product lines that support an eco-friendly, non-throwaway lifestyle. They have Canada’s only Jar Bar, ‘green’ cleaning products, ‘no-waste’ beauty products, and more!

If you are looking for an agency that understands your company’s unique values, get in touch with our team!

    May is Melanoma Awareness Month

Every year, thousands of Canadians are diagnosed with Melanoma. The incidence of the disease is increasing faster than that of any other cancer, currently it’s the leading cancer in women between the ages of 24-29 years.

We feel honoured to be working with the Save Your Skin Foundation, a Canadian not-for-profit group doing important work to build melanoma awareness. Through events and other initiatives, the Foundation focuses on: raising funds for education and awareness, providing emotional and financial support for those dealing with skin cancer, and on supporting the ongoing research and treatment of skin cancer.

Save Your Skin’s Founder, Kathleen Barnard, and her son, Executive Director David Barnard, are incredibly inspiring to work with. The family’s story is one of strength, determination, and love. Kathy Barnard, who’s currently battling melanoma, shares her personal story to further awareness of skin cancer.

    Written by Kathy Barnard

“It’s not the amount of breaths you take, but the moments that take your breath away”, – Kathy Barnard

Writing this piece has been without a doubt one of the hardest things I have ever had to do.

That Day, April 10th 2003, my Doctor told me I had this horrible disease, it was exactly like the Cancer commercial. I could see her lips moving but there was no sound. The room was getting smaller and I remember thinking “who is she talking to?”. I left her office thanking her, yet asking no questions, and then sat in my vehicle remembering only three words. METASTIZIED, MALIGNANT, MELANOMA.

How could this be, I had a small lump on my left elbow for over a year, and had it checked multiple times being told it was only fatty tissue. Could the recent diagnosis just be a mistake?

I will never forget that day, as it was, and will always be, a life changing experience for myself and my family. From the moment I was told, I knew knowledge would be power, so I wanted to know everything I could about the disease and the treatment. But I never wanted any statistics or time period. Every cancer is different and every patient is different.

That Day, I took all my feelings of anger, fear, disappointment, and denial, and filed them somewhere in a vault in the back of my head. I vowed they would stay there FOREVER. I had a battle to fight now for the rest of my life and needed all my energy and strength for that. Like most cancer patients I will leave the doors to that vault locked as there is always the possibility that this battle will need to be fought again.

When people ask me how I stayed so strong and positive, I explain it like this:

The past few years have been like a roller coaster ride. I am the lead car and can see all the ups and downs, twists and turns on the track, so I can get prepared. But, the cars following (my family) don’t have it as easy. They are hanging on to me, (the lead car), with everything they have, unaware of the ups and downs twists and turns, determined not to let me fall off the tracks. For them, I will stay strong and will try to protect them as much as I can, as we ride it out together.
